Useful Advice

"To future study abroad students: Korean culture is very worthwhile to experience. Among Asian cultures, I would say that Korean culture is very unique. At first it might be hard for you to understand certain behavior, but as time goes on, you will find yourself enjoying it. Also, I strongly recommend that students who plan to study abroad in Korea take Korean language courses at Korea University. Korea University offers Korean language courses for study abroad students from beginning to advanced levels. Learning Korean will be very helpful in making new Korean friends. Your social life will also be mouch more fun if you learn a little Korean. Even begining-level Korean would be strongly recommended."

Location

"Korea is one of Asia's most prosperous countries. Therefore I had the benefit of making a lot of Asian friends in Korea. Also, due to the good relationship between Korea and Japan, I also got to meet a lot of Japanese friends in Korea."

Courses

"The courses I took were all in English. It was good that Korea University has a lot of business major courses in English, so I could take a lot of major courses while abroad and transfer them all back to U of I."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07

"There was nothing bad about the courses. All courses were taught in English, and all faculty members spoke fluent English. It was actually quite impressive."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07

"I wish I could have made a fixed course schedule for my study abroad term before I left U of I. Even though I selected a list of courses to take at Korea University before I left U of I, the list did not take into account the time for each course, so there were time conflicts with the courses I selected. Then I was forced to look for new courses and I had to email the course descriptions back to U of I for course approval. It took a while to wait for the approvals but by then all the classes had started in Korea."

Housing

"The housing I stayed at was an international house. The facility was very new. It also allowed me to meet a lot of people from all over the world."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07

Costs

"The location was a bit far from U of I. Thus, the airplane ticket is expensive."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07

Since the housing does not provide lunch or dinner, I spent a lot on food everyday. Normally, it would cost me 5000 Korean won, or 5 US dollars for each meal. So, it would cost me a minimum of 10 U.S. dollars on food every day."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07

"The housing fee was a bit expensive. It was 1500 US dollars (double room) for a semester."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07

"Textboks here are much cheaper than textbooks in the United States. I spent about 120 US dollars on textbooks. I bought three textbooks and three lecture notes books. Each textbook cost around 35 US dollars. Each lecture notebook cost less than 10 US dollars."
-Ho Jong Kenny Kim, Spring '07
